After a while trying to coordinate a trip together, Slade and I decided that it would be more merciful for me to go by myself. At least for him. I like having him along, but he just hates it. As much as I miss him I can picture the drag in his step if he were to be doing the things I am doing.
So it really doesn't make any sense for either of us to be tortured, him by sightseeing or me by not. So today I write from London, and am pretty excited about the things I have been seeing so far. Today I went to Hever Castle, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn that was built in the thirteenth century. Yesterday I went to Battle, the town that marks the site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings.
The great thing about going myself is that I don't have to do things that first time visitors do like the Tower of London and the changing of the guard. I can knock off the things that I want to see but no one else would.
One funny thing that happened yesterday was that I got hushed by a bobby, a London policeman, because I was audibly asking him a question while someone was protesting the Iraq war in front of parliament--with a megaphone! I certainly hope that the US government never gets to the point where the definition of free speech is not saying whatever you want to whomever you want (from the posters on the subway that remind visitors that it is not ever ok to say anything even THOUGHT to be offensive) like it should be, it involves active assistance and resources to CERTAIN people saying CERTAIN things. Speaking of Henry VIII, civil rights in the UK are headed right back there, it seems.

Did you see the Bayeux Tapestry? I'm not sure it's actually in Battle but it has to be around there somewhere right? If not, it should be:)
How are you holding up with the English food? Every American I've met that has been to my homeland hates it (including my dear husband) but I still love it. I actually crave it when I'm pregnant. Yes, I'm totally biased:)
I hope you're staying in a little B&B and not some hotel chain because that would be a sin!:)
BTW - I am expecting a FULL post about everything you are doing on your trip.

Have a wonderful time! I love some solo travel time for the same reasons. Enjoy all that history them folks got over thar!
And the dairy. Something about that dairy over there that's just soooo delish. Especially the yogurt! And mmm, clotted cream - though if there were ever a product in need of a marketing overhaul, starting with a new name, that is it. The foodstff we once knew as "prunes" have recently become "dried plums", after all. Same idea: marketing makeover.

Oh, and Stacey, I actually love the food, but I love all food. At least when I'm hungry. I have eaten about three Cornish Pastys or whatever they are. Basically fat wrapped within fat.
Oh, and the Bayeux tapestry is actually in Bayeux, France, the got it back. It was made there and was retained in French/Norman hands. But they made a copy of it that is in Reading in the 1800's. I'd like to see it, I just have to find out where Reading is.

Are you enjoying the "English Breakfast?" That was served to us every single day when mom & us sisters went to London a few years back. I remember soft uncooked "rashers" of bacon - classic English fare!
